The Centre for Demographic Studies of the UAB and the research group DemoSoc of the Pompeu Fabra University have been chosen by the members of the council of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) to be the organisers of the 2029 World Population Conference. It is the most important conference in the world in this field.

The city of Barcelona will host the conference, which will bring together some 2,000 participants from around the world, both from academia and international organisations, such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA, www.unfpa.org).

Population studies are especially important today because of the rapid and complex changes taking place globally. The conference will address interconnected challenges that require an accurate understanding of human populations, such as the impact of climate change on population dynamics, ageing and declining birth rates, the stresses of urbanisation and infrastructure, international migration and refugee crises, increasing health inequalities, etc.
