Murrindindi Shire Council hosted a successful National Tree Day Talk on Wednesday 16 July, bringing together people from across the Shire to learn and share ideas about the vital role trees play in supporting biodiversity and strengthening our communities.
Held across three in-person locations in Alexandra, Kinglake and Yea, as well as online, the event attracted 35 participants and showcased Council's ongoing commitment to protecting our environment. Cr Jodi Adams attended the Kinglake event, and Mayor Damien Gallagher, Cr Sue Carpenter and CEO Livia Bonazzi attended the event at the Yea Wetlands.
The evening featured a fascinating presentation from Ron Litjens, the 2025 Volunteer of the Year, who shared his knowledge of how native trees and plants attract birds, bees and other pollinators. Ron's talk included stunning wildlife photography and insights into the unique features plants use to attract different species. Feedback from attendees praised the informative and engaging talk.
Council staff also delivered updates on the recent Street Tree Audit, shared advice on regionally appropriate planting, and gave away more than 70 native plants to attendees, in-person and online. Attendees also learned about upcoming National Tree Day planting events and Council's 'Nominate Your Favourite Street Tree' competition, which offers a chance to win one of three $40 grocery vouchers.
The National Tree Day celebrations will continue for the rest of July. You can still nominate your favourite street tree for a chance to win until Thursday 31 July and attend a local tree planting session on Sunday 27 July. Council's Sustainability and Assets Portfolio Councillor Sue Carpenter said, "It was fantastic to see our community come together to learn more about the important role trees play in supporting biodiversity and enhancing our towns and communities across Murrindindi Shire. Events like this help build appreciation for the environment and encourage people to value the benefits of trees in our towns. I encourage everyone to keep the momentum going. Nominate your favourite street tree or join a local planting event this National Tree Day!"
